If you have a specific date in mind it’s a good idea to book your venue early as they often book up closer to the time. Church halls and community centres are popular venues as they are spacious and normally have a kitchen, table and chairs. Alternatively, if there will be a small number of children attending there’s always the possibility of hosting the party at home.
Book an entertainer
Again, if you are set on having a particular entertainer at your party book them early before they become unavailable on your chosen date. Make sure the child has a say and ask them what entertainment or theme they would like. Discuss the aspects of your party with the entertainer beforehand and ask as many questions as possible. How long will they stay? What do the various parts of their entertainment entail? Will they be there during the food? All good questions. Just ask.
Decide how many children you want to invite. Think about whether it’s really necessary to invite the child’s whole class, or if you can get away with a smaller number of the child’s closer friends. Try to send invites out at least a month before the party date (but sooner if possible), before people make other plans and to give you a good idea of numbers (useful for catering).
Food and cake
When it comes to food, keep it simple. Sandwiches, crisps, and cupcakes always go down well. Try to add some healthy options too, as surprisingly children will voluntarily eat carrot sticks and grapes if they are in front of them. It’s better to splash out on an extravagant cake than fancy food, as that’s what the children really notice. If there is a theme for your party, try to match the cake to this theme.
Visit the venue beforehand so you have an idea of how you can decorate it. To save money and time, buy your decorations online. Balloons, banners, streamers, tablecloths and party hats are a good place to start. Browse and see what else you can find. If you are using helium balloons you will need a helium gas bottle which you can hire from a balloon supplier or buy relatively cheaply on Amazon.
Children always expect a party bag to take home so make sure they don’t leave empty handed! This doesn’t mean lots of money has to be spent though. Buy the bags in bulk online and fill them with small items like sweets, stickers, pencils and toys. Every party bag needs a slice of cake, so don’t forget to add this in later on.
Happy partying! :)
